Our story

The story of a Haapsalu shawl knitter

I love natural materials and traditional handwork. With Vill ja sall, I bring together fine Italian yarn and Estonian craft traditions to create simple, beautiful pieces made to be enjoyed for years.

My interest in handwork has been part of my life for many years. I am a long-time member of the Haapsalu Lace Centre, and the Haapsalu shawl is my greatest love in craft.

Estonian craft: Haapsalu shawls and more

The Haapsalu shawl is one of Estonia's best-known craft traditions, with roots going back to the 19th century. Traditionally the shawl is so fine and airy that a true one can be drawn through a ring.

The tradition of knitting Haapsalu shawls and scarves is part of Estonia's national intangible cultural heritage inventory. Every shawl we sell is knitted with respect for that tradition.
